What Is Address Line 2?

Address line 2 is a vital part of the mail order process. Without it, customers may have trouble identifying the sender's address, which can lead to abandonment. This field is not only difficult to read but also contains too much information, making parsing out important information difficult or inconsequential. For example, a person's name might be mixed up with their apartment number. Ideally, the apartment number should appear in the address line. Address validation software can help address these issues and reduce the chances of a misspelling.

A PO Box is an address element that can also appear in address line 2. It is important to identify a PO Box, which is a separate address element from the street number. A PO Box address is useful when a person needs to mail a package to an address in another city. In addition, an apt number is often written on the address line before the street number. A hyphen is added to the end to distinguish the number from the street name. For example, apartment number 123 is found at 555 Street Name.

Address line 2 is not mandatory in the United States Postal Service. This means that putting "Unit 21" on address line 2 will not result in a standardized address. This may be fine for a human, but an automated processing system could have trouble determining this information.
